Air conditioners have become a staple in the Filipino home. With unpredictable weather, even the supposed rainy season would call for air conditioning in the middle of the day. This electronic appliance is also a must in most offices.

While air conditioners get a bad reputation for being energy vampires, a lot of this energy waste actually comes from having a poorly maintained unit. Here’s what you can do to improve your unit’s efficiency and increase your comfort.

Air Conditioner Filters

Dirty or poorly maintained air conditioner filters cause most of the problems people have with their air conditioning units. This is particularly important if you always use your air conditioner, have a dusty house, or you have furry pets.

Clogged or dirty filters reduce the unit’s overall efficiency, blocks airflow, and even blow dust into your room. The dirt could also impair your evaporator coil’s heat-absorbing capacity.

Some filters are reusable, meaning they would be good with a cleaning, while others need to be replaced. It is usually advised to clean or replace your unit’s filters every month or two, especially during the cooling season or when it is regularly used.

A clean air conditioner means your energy consumption will be reduced by 5% to 15%.

Air Conditioner Coils

Your air conditioning unit’s evaporator and condenser coils collect dirt over time. With a clean filter, you avoid these from spoiling quickly and reduce the need for expensive repairs. Check your air conditioner coils every year and clean it as necessary. Air conditioners with outdoor condenser coils tend to get dirtier much easier.

The aluminum fins on these coils also tend to get bent and block airflow, causing it to consume more energy. Wholesalers sell “fin combs” to fix these fins into near-original condition.

Condensate drains also have a tendency to get clogged and may prevent a unit from reducing humidity. This results in extra moisture, which may damage your unit and discolor items in the room.

Hire a Professional

Only a professional can give the most thorough cleanup of your air conditioner. Luckily, you can contact your local EMCOR store through the phone or using our online form to avail of this service. This way, you can make sure your unit is given the utmost care. Only the best!
