Brand New vs. Second-Hand (Appliance, Furniture, Gadget, etc.)

by | Jul 25, 2017 | Uncategorized

When buying things for our home, there are a lot of things to consider. From our furniture to our appliances, our gadgets, and even our vehicles, we need to make sure that we’re getting the best value for our money. We take the time and effort to explore our options, and sometimes we come to consider buying second-hand items to save money.

There are reliable sellers of second-hand items such as trusted friends and acquaintances, or those who have long been known to be trustworthy. On the other hand, there are also those who might sell items second-hand for more than what these items are worth. Some sellers might not be honest about the condition or authenticity of the items they are selling.

There are items that are worth buying brand new while there are some that are fine bought “pre-loved”. As the saying goes, “Buy it nice, don’t buy it twice”. Buying brand new also assures the warranty in case it breaks. It also gives you the option to have the item delivered to your home and get help with installation. This can also happen when you buy second-hand, but not all the time.

One important thing to consider when buying second-hand is the reason for selling. If the item was sold because they bought a new one, you might want to inspect the condition of the item. Why did they have to buy a new one? Is there a problem with the item they’re selling or they just wanted to upgrade?
Now, we will discuss whether it would buy certain items brand new or second-hand!

#1 Appliances

Buying second-hand appliances can bring you a lot of savings, especially if you find something that is in good condition. There are a lot of types of home appliances. As a rule of thumb, you should exercise caution when buying appliances that deal with water, gas, cooling, or heating. These appliances are better bought new because second-hand items may have gone through wear and tear, making them prone to accidents. You can buy quality appliances at a cheaper price when you consider brands you might not be familiar with or wait for sales promotions.

#2 Furniture

Furniture can be made from different materials such as plastic, wood, or metal. How a piece of furniture stands the test of time depends on what it is made with. Another thing to consider is the quality of the cushioning or upholstery. You can buy reliable furniture second-hand but brand new furniture can be more pleasing to look at and will last you longer. Furniture tends to be expensive, so make sure you’re making a worthy investment.

#3 Gadgets

Everyone always wants the newest phones, laptops, tablets, and more. There are many online sellers of used gadgets with varying levels of reliability. Second-hand items may have hidden defects that the seller might not disclose. At the same time, gadgets tend to drop prices months after release. You can have your dream gadget by then and save some cash too.

#4 Motorcycles

Again, you must consider the reason for selling when buying motor vehicles. Vehicles are costly to maintain. Buying second-hand might end up with you spending more on repair and maintenance, racking up costs much higher than buying brand new. Many reliable stores have installment options and low downpayment rates these days. Getting a brand new motorcycle or tricycle can be more affordable than you think.

There are definitely some things that are better bought brand new rather than second hand. When buying brand new appliances, furniture, gadgets, or motorcycles, it’s important to buy at a store you can trust. You can find a variety of brands and options for your brand new goods at your nearest Emcor store!
