Power Surges: How to Protect Your Appliances

by | Dec 5, 2018 | News

With typhoons and storms frequenting the Philippines, it also means that we should expect power surges and power interruptions due to the harsh rains. These could range from electrical glitches to brownouts or blackouts.

You can’t control the weather, but you can put measures in place to protect your valuable appliances from power surges caused by power disruption.

Invest in a generator

Portable generators can keep key appliances or light sources running during a blackout. Of course, it would also be important to use it wisely. Remember to unplug the portable generator from your main power source in the event of a power interruption.

When running the generator, remember also to turn off your main power breaker so you’re disconnected from your provider, preventing damage from power surges. Finally, remember to unplug your generator before turning the main breaker back on when electricity resumes.

Purchase surge protectors

Surge protectors are your cheapest option to protect your appliances from power surges. They’re like inexpensive insurance. If you have expensive appliances, it’s worth spending a little extra to buy a surge protector for each one.

If you experience a power surge, then make sure to replace your surge protectors. Their role is to give up their life to protect your appliances. They won’t be able to handle another one.

Invest in a UPS

If you have a desktop computer, you would know the frustration of losing the files you are working on when it suddenly shuts down during a power interruption. A UPS or an Uninterruptible Power Source gives you a “grace period” of five to seven minutes. This allows you enough time to save all of your work and properly shut down your computer.

Keep the battery charged and remember to turn it off when shutting your computer down.

Pull the plug

One of the most basic reminders is to unplug all of your appliances whenever a storm approaches. Thunder and lightning can be a real threat. Electricity moves fast and can enter your house through the wiring. The resulting surge can damage the appliances you still have plugged in. Keep your hands off the plug or outlets during the storm as well.
